Man oh man, there is a lot of breakage and silliness around this place. It's really time I got an updated version out. 6 years or so I haven't really fixed or updated much of anything. I need to start from scratch.
Gah, that's gonna be a lot of work.
Please post any bug reports or feature requests in this thread. If something is seriously hosed on the site as of now I'll try to put in a fix. (registration isn't working right now...if that's your complaint, go through the registration process then
send an email and I'll get you going by hand)

Well, after years of whinging, muttering, and inaction an actual rewrite if this website is underway. I'm moving from PHP to mod_perl (I'm a monger through and through) and things are going pretty slowly, but they're going.
Hooray!

I just noticed the dates...on every post. Hrrrrrrmmmmmm....looks like I screwed the db transfer and didn't notice.

Too bad the old one has already been blown away!
At least the IDs kept em in order. Sigh. Now to figure out why new posts get the same date.

userlame.com is no longer running on my personal network after probably 8 years or so. It now lives in a real-life datacenter!

In other news, I'm moving things off of my network because I have some big plans ahead...
Please do tell me if you see anything funky on the site or something doesn't work.
Also, I fixed the date/time problem. I really can't believe I waited so long to make a fix as minor as that was.
HI.
I have a suggestion for userlame.com.
Can you have it so I can add a photo that is not from a URL. One that I can dump from my desktop.
K?
Thanks!

Someone local (in my city) just checked out the site today for the first time in over a month.
WHO ARE YOU MYSTERY PERSON? SHOW YOURSELF!
Really, I'm just curious.

This is a list of all the changes large and small that will be appearing on this site. If there's anything you'd like to see here, or something you think would be cool, your comments are welcome! What? You're not a member of the site yet?
Go here [userlame.com] then come back and post!
This list is going to get long. I'll add to it as I write things.
Member stuff:
*members will have personal journals
*members will be able to comment on other members' journals
*members will have a user image linked to profile
*members will have galleries for picture storage (pictures will not be hotlinkable outside userlame.com)
*members will have a limited space 'scratchpad' just to write crap down and save it somewhere. use it for whatever.
*members will be able to start picture galleries and upload to current galleries
*members will have the option of having personal messages emailed directy to them
*members will have the options to 'watch' threads and have new comments emailed to them
*members will have an additional
board [userlame.com] called '
YourName's board' - you will be able to mix and match current boards into one personal board showing only what you say you're interested in. this may include selected groups as well.
Display stuffs:
*
boards page [userlame.com] will display at the bottom "recent topics" and "recent posts" (number of each a preference setting) at the bottom of the page - I may put this underneath every page while you're on the boards.
*some sort of members page - viewable by date joined, recent journal, recent pics, other stuff like that.
Etc:
*boards/journals/members search (this might not be done for a little while we'll see)
*user groups - similar to the boards but for interest groups. will have threads, picture galleries, etc
So yeah, this will be edited and added to a lot.
It's over two years later. Yup.

There will be some brief outages tonight both with the site and userlame.net in general as I move to a new network. I hope to minimize any downtime and I will try to make the failover work into the new environment.
Then I'm gonna have to rewrite that thing. Sigh. Here goes!
Final move is complete. Things are finally up and running the way they should be. phewwwwwwwwww that was a mess. I feel god-awful today as well so that hasn't helped.
Please please please notify me of any issues with the site/mail/anything.
I hope I'm mostly done.

userlame.net is back....sort of. Got the network installed today and all is happy except for my upstream. There's something ungodly going on here and I'm waiting on my ISP to look into it. I've got my downstream running happily along, but my upstream is at like 10 Kb/s. Ouch. That's kilo
bit mind you.
Update 4/3 5:15pm CDT: Upstream is back to about normal. Things are looking good.

You read that right. The network is moving. Tomorrow-like. Kind of interesting that the last two front page posts which are months apart are just announcing downtime. I haven't even looked at this site in a long time.
Bleh.
So yeah, AT&T will do their shtuff, then some downtime which is planned to be 30-60 minutes (god I hope not more), then I'll be back in business. Until that time, the desktop/camserv is going down down down!

There will be a period of scheduled downtime for the site today at around 5pm in order to upgrade power. Finally there will be a UPS between up and disasters. The site should only be down briefly, though there may be a few hiccups through that time as the servers and network devices are moved. There will be about a 45 second interruption in all services. The website will experience a slightly longer downtime as the server is moved, and there will be multiple ~5 second outages as failovers pick up.
On a side note, this will be a good test for the failover setup. Hopefully it works as planned.
Ok, everything seems to be back to normal. Let me know if you find anything funky. Pft...like anyone is reading this.

There will be ongoing maintenance throughout the day today. Should not be any noticable outages...if anything looks odd please
find me online and let me know. Thanks. :)
Well I f'd that up already.
(Sitting on the server remotely - not having planned this through yet)
[root@orion.userlame.net]# ip link set dnet down
And there it sits. Uhhhhhhh........oops.

There will be a scheduled maintenance network outage sometime this afternoon/evening as servers are being moved, and hardware maintained. All services will be affected for about 5 minutes, and this site will be down for possibly 30 minutes.
That's all.

leo (desktop) is currently down and will be for the rest of the day most likely. I've been having cpu overheating issues and in resolving them, snapped the heatsink clip so I can't run the thing. Cam will be offline during this period. But never fear, all will be nicely resolved after UPS gets here.

Here's hoping I don't miss them knocking...
He missed them knocking.

Yet again, had a goodly amount of downtime (approximately 10:50 to 17:25 CST) on all services including smtp, dns, http, etc. Again due to a storm knocking out power for a brief period and servers not coming back up until I woke up and turned them on. Ugh.
I really, really need to come up with a solution to this.

Had an outage from approximately 2:45am to approximately 7:30am (when I finally was able to come home and turn the servers back on) caused by a storm knocking out power. Power was only down briefly; probably 10 minutes or so. Ugh.

Outage included all dns, mail, http, and everything else I serve.
If anyone would like to donate a UPS to the site, I will be forever greatful. Forever.

Well, the server's moved to a new location and a new network. A few hiccups here and there, but things went pretty smoothly. There might be outages some places as dns propagates (I'm an idiot and looked up this address on my isp's domain so that'll be cached for a bit).
Otherwise, things are coming back up to normal. I really like the new net. I'm able to actually have failovers for the servers and crap.
I'm also building a new router. Decided I could use a bit faster machine if I'm going to be doing more tunnelling/encrypting and working as a backup MX.
All in all, things are coming along.

userlame.com is going to be moving both physically and ummmm....networkally very soon. New service is installed and I'm going to give a day or so for DNS to propagate a little bit. Then this server is outta here and in the new place.
I know this will matter to all 6....no wait 2.....oh no, that's right...the none avid readers of userlame.com. Thus the advance notice and all.
Hopefully mail will not be too much of an issue switching over. Eep.

I haven't been updating at
all on this site. Sorry about that. Things have been going on behind the curtain though. I've stepped into the 21st century and started using real revision control on site development. Easier to fix my stupid mistakes.

In related news, the new site is coming along slowly but surely. I've become bogged down in adding a bajillion new things, but they should be worth it. Still planning on releasing the framework as open source (another reason for the new development model).
Other than that, life has been crazy. I seem to be looking down a new road every few hours. I'm getting dizzy.
you always have those weird schedules. why doncha gimme a call instead..i wouldn't wanna wake you up or whatever

userlame.com will be going down for a short period sometime tonight. Not that anybody will see this or notice, but I thought I'd mention it.
Yup.
There we go. All data is on the new drive. Whoopie!!#@$!
